Whenever one is asked to name the fittest cricketer in the Indian cricket team, Virat Kohli’s name comes up with an iota of delay. In fact, the standard of fitness in India’s cricketing circuits has become so strict now that passing the acid test to play for the country in itself is a challenge and even a player’s cricketing reputation doesn’t help much.
The yo-yo test has become a common term in India’s cricketing circles and the leadership of captain Kohli and head coach Ravi Shastri has sought it to be made compulsory. However, though the Indian skipper Virat Kohli has been a leader in the business of fitness, he is surprisingly not the best of all and that is something which will encourage a healthy trend in the country’s cricketing circuit.
Talented batsman Karun Nair, who is the only other triple centurion other than Virat Kohli for India in Tests, recently said in an interview with Cricbuzz that as per Team India’s trainer Shanker Basu, it is not Virat Kohli but he himself who is the fittest among the lot.
A feat that makes Nair proud
“I’ve been spending a lot of time with (Shanker) Basu Sir, our trainer and Sanjay Bangar sir as well, our batting coach. Obviously a lot of throwdowns and a lot of net sessions. But mainly I have been spending time with Basu Sir. According to him, I am the fittest person in the team right now. I am very proud of that and I just want to keep improving on that,” he was quoted as saying in the interview.
The 26-year-old batsman who hit an unbeaten 303 against England in a home series in 2016, however, got little opportunity to show his fitness on the international stage as he kept travelling as a tourist for the entire series in England. New pick Hanuma Vihari also went on to play his debut Test in the series but Nair did not get a game – something which left former Indian great Sunil Gavaskar livid.
