India suffered a humiliating 10-wicket loss to Pakistan in their first game. Pakistan displayed complete dominance last Sunday to clinch a first-ever win against archrivals India and broke the jinx. After sustaining five losses to India in the T20 world cup, Pakistan finally managed to break India’s age-old dominance.
Babar Azam became the first captain to lead Pakistan to victory in a World cup match and achieved a magnificent record that the Pakistan legends failed to do. Luck favoured the Men in Green when they won the toss and invited India to bat first. The 21-year-old Shaheen Afridi swung the ball to wreck Indian top-order within the powerplay.
The mighty Pakistan bowling lineup never allowed batting-heavy India to free their arms and controlled the game throughout Indian innings. After losing KL Rahul (3), Rohit Sharma (0), and Suryakumar Yadav (11) in regular intervals, Virat Kohli (57) and Rishabh Pant (39) were pressurised to play safe and not couldn’t risk going for big shots. India managed to put a relatively decent score of 151/7 in 20 overs.
Pakistan openers Mohammad Rizwan (79) and Babar Azam (68) slammed Indian bowlers from the world ‘go’ and remained unbeaten to clinch a historical victory by 10 wickets. All Indian bowlers were wicketless and no way looked to stop the world number 2 (Babar Azam) and number 7 (Rizwan T20) in the shorter format of the game. India must go all the way to win against New Zealand to keep themselves active in the race to the semifinals.
Like India, the Blackcaps suffered an early blow from Pakistan in their first game when the Green Brigade continued their dominance the second time in a row. Although Kiwi bowlers tried to defend a paltry score and dragged the match till the end, 131 onboard wasn’t just enough to restrict in-form Pakistan batters.
The vintage Shoaib Malik used all his experience to take the team over the line and guided the team to another win in the tournament. Known for making powerful comebacks, Kane Williamson-led New Zealand will look to bounce back against India on Sunday.
New Zealand enjoys a better record against India and proved a tough pill to swallow for India. Except for a seven-wicket win under Sourav Ganguly leadership in the 2003 World Cup at Centurion, the Men in Blue lost all the next four encounters to Kiwis in World Cup.
