Things looked absolutely grim on day 1 of Bengaluru Test when the wicket of Ishant Sharma fell and India had only 189 runs on the board. The crowds at the Chinnaswamy Stadium were let down. More importantly, they could not see their new found hero Virat Kohli score big either. This only added to the grief of the fans at the venue. Things turned from bad to worse as Australia managed to eke out some handy lead after their first innings.
Two quick wickets in India’s second innings saw the hosts struggling yet again when skipper Kohli went out to bat. Yet again, he perished soon and the crowds were stunned to silence. They thought the match was as good as gone with Kohli – apparently their lone hope in the match – heading back to the pavilion. But a gritty 118 run stand between Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara helped India manage to take a crucial 187 run lead and set up a target of 188 for the Aussies to chase.
R Ashwin, India’s premier bowler, had been in the firing line over the last week or two for having underperformed. The offie got back to the critics in a fitting way on the day when it mattered the most. Ashwin scalped six wickets to run through the Australian batting line-up. The visitors could only managed 112 on the board and lost by 75 runs, thereby giving India their first win in the series.
