#MeToo: BCCI CEO Rahul Johri accused of sexual harassment

The chief executive of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Rahul Johri has been accused of sexual harassment. He has been called out and accused of inappropriate behaviour on account of the victim by an activist on social media. Johri becomes one of the first Indians in the world of cricket to be caught in the quagmire of allegations as the #MeToo storm rages on in the country. The top man has been serving as the BCCI CEO since April 2016.

Currently, Johri is the person responsible for the functioning, operations, stakeholder management and building strategies for further promoting cricket in India. Prior to this stint with the BCCI, he served as Executive Vice President and General Manager – South Asia for Discovery Networks Asia Pacific. The woman who has come out to reveal her #MeToo moment against Johri is a former colleague and she’s shared a horrific account of what had happened.

Allegations against Johri by a former colleague

Johri has been named by a journalist through an anonymous post. The woman has accused Johri of inappropriate behaviour and sexual assault. Author Harnidh Kaur shared screenshots of the detailed account of the victim on her Twitter handle.

The woman, who remained anonymous, claimed to be from the same profession and accused Johri of sexual misconduct in regards to an incident that occurred while both of them were working for different media institutions. According to her account, when she and Johri were colleagues, he used his position to offer her a job, and subsequently lured her into his appartment. Currently, these are only allegations, and subsequent investigations could reveal further details about the incident.

Other Me too reports in cricket

There have already been allegations of sexual harassment against other cricketers. Earlier there were reports which named former Sri Lankan captain Arjuna Ranatunga and current fast bowler Lasith Malinga for allegedly harassing women. They are yet to react to the allegations, release a statement in defence nor has an enquiry been called up by the Sri Lankan board.
