The problems seem to grow more and more for the England Cricket Board (ECB). After Ollie Robinson was suspended from playing all forms of cricket for his racist and sexist tweets which he posted while being a teenager, another news emerged that an unnamed England player was involved doing the same when he was 16 years.
While some felt the ECB’s decision to suspend Robinson was a bit too harsh, others felt it was the right one considering there is no scope for racism in sport. Former England opener Michael Carberry has backed the ECB’s decision and in fact, went as far as saying that the 27-year-old should not have graduated in the first place.
Robinson’s tweets came to prominence last Wednesday after the first day of his Test debut at Lord’s. The 27-year-old pacer had a decent first day with the ball where he picked two wickets and ended the match with an impressive seven wickets. In fact, he apologized for his actions and was ashamed of his behavior while he was 18-years of age.
Robinson also felt he was forced to tweet such comments because he was undergoing tough times at that time. His apology and his impressive performance with the ball was not enough as the ECB suspended him.
“Here we go again. It further backs up what I said last year, that the game has a massive problem. Until people start to deal with the problem, I am one of those – and I can speak for most of my community – we are not interested in proposals or what cricket is proposing to do,” Carberry, who has represented England in all three formats, told Sky Sports News.
Michael Carberry questions ECB as to why Ollie Robinson was not punished earlier
Earlier former England captain Michael Vaughan lashed out at the ECB for not doing a background check on Robinson before making his international debut. Carberry also posed the same question that ECB should have looked into the matter when Robinson actually tweeted in 2012 and 2013.
“We need to start seeing action. Good on the ECB for suspending Ollie Robinson. I have got some other questions on that – why was this not picked up on years ago? Why has this guy been allowed to get this far in his career, and achieve what he’s achieved at the highest level? It’s a disappointment to me. Why are we not affecting our young professional cricketers better than what I am seeing right now?”
