English cricketer Michael Carberry is all set to join County side Leicestershire on a loan deal from Hampshire, the club announced on Friday. With the Championship entering the business end of the tournament, Leicestershire was hunting for a good top order batsman to strengthen their line up and hence, they agreed to terms with the 36-year-old.

Popularly termed as “The Foxes”, Leicestershire have been struggling off late and they find themselves at the bottom of Division Two without a single win this season. In their next game against Kent, Carberry will be a part of the unit and he will have a crucial role to play right from the outset.

After spending some time with the English national side, Carberry was one of those few cricketers who never got to play at the International stage after the 5-0 Ashes defeat to Australia in 2013. Post that, he was diagnosed cancer and was out of the game for quite awhile. The southpaw then made a spectacular comeback and resumed playing County cricket.

Though his First-Class record has been prolific, he managed to play just 6 Test matches, 6 ODIs and one T20I for England. He recently completed 200 first class games and had a good outing in the Natwest T20 Blast. He will be eager to score some runs and rescue the Foxes out of this diabolical situation.

Michael offers a lot of experience

Leicestershire head coach Pierre de Bruyn was elated with Carberry’s inclusion into the side. He said that the former English cricketer’s International experience will be pivotal for the side ahead of the crucial encounter against Kent. “It’s great to have Michael on board with us ahead of the Kent game. Michael has an impressive career record in county cricket and offers lots of experience having also represented England,” De Bruyn said.

Hampshire County’s Director of Cricket Giles White conveyed his best wishes to Carberry on behalf of the club. “Michael is obviously keen to play regular red ball cricket and will have this opportunity at Leicester. We wish him well and look forward to welcoming him back for Finals Day,” White said.
