Michael Vaughan baffled by Australia's decision to not open with D'Arcy Short
The Ashes-winning skipper was baffled by the decision and took to Twitter to express his feelings.
Former England skipper Michael Vaughan has questioned Australian team management’s decision to not try out D’Arcy Short as an opener in ODIs as the team from Down Under continue to struggle to find a solid opening duo. Ever since David Warner’s ban, Australia’s top-order has struggled to put up consistent shows. They have tried out the likes of Usman Khawaja and Alex Carey with the incumbent Aaron Finch at the top of the order but nothing has worked so far.
But despite the continuous struggles, Australia continues to overlook Short who has been in sensational form. He recently bagged the Player of the Tournament award in the Big Bash League for his all-round show. For the second year in a row, the southpaw finished the season as the top-scorer. He scored a staggering 637 runs at an average of over 53 with the help of 6 fifties. No other player could even cross the 600-run mark in the league.
Short was also in good form in the recently-concluded T20I series against India, scoring 37 and 40 to help Australia win the series 2-0. However, his current form made little difference as Australia persisted with their out-of-form skipper Aaron Finch and makeshift opener Khawaja, much to the surprise of Vaughan. The Ashes-winning skipper was baffled by the decision and took to Twitter to express his feelings, writing, “No idea how Darcy Short isn’t opening for the Aussies … !!! #INDvAUS #JustSaying”
Finch continues to struggle
There is no end to Finch’s misery as his struggle at the top of the order continued on Saturday during the first ODI in Hyderabad. Finch lasted just two deliveries before edging a Jasprit Bumrah delivery behind the wickets. Finch was also out of form in the T20Is, scoring 0 and 8.
