Team India is playing England in the fourth Test at The Ageas Bowl in Southampton. England lead the series 2-1 and this Test is a crucial one for both the teams. In this match, English skipper Joe Root won the toss and opted to bat first. However, this decision didn’t really work out in the hosts’ favour as India have dominated them completely in the first session of day 1. Indian skipper Virat Kohli has been aggressive with his approach in this match.
His field placements were spot on forcing the batsmen to commit mistakes. That should be attributed to the fact that the bowlers responded beautifully to the challenge the hosts and have pushed England on to the backfoot by picking wickets at regular intervals. Former English skipper Michael Vaughan seemed to be mighty impressed with Kohli’s tactics on the field to dismiss Jos Buttler.
Virat Kohli’s plan to dismiss Jos Buttler
He took to Twitter to tell the audience exactly what the Indian skipper was trying to do. In his tweet, Vaughan termed Kohli’s captaincy was brilliant this morning. He further elaborated by saying that the 29-year-old opened up more spaces on the field. In the process, he brought the fielders to attacking positions. Given his T20 style of play, Buttler was lured to hit the ball through the open spaces and score runs quickly.
The wicketkeeper-batsman ended up fishing a delivery bowled wide outside the off-stump by Mohammed Shami. As a result, he ended up edging one to Virat who was waiting for a catch at third slip. Although this shot might have yielded him runs in ODIs or T20Is, it isn’t the same case in Tests. The Indian skipper pouched the catch quite comfortably. Shami also has to be credited for his persistence with the full-length deliveries which forced Buttler to go for the expansive drive.
“Brilliant captaincy … Put Mid off to another catcher to open up more space to score and it creates the chance .. Great catch to follow it up … #ENGvIND,” Vaughan tweeted after Buttler’s dismissal.
