Michael Vaughan picks his all-time XI from 1960s to 2010s
Only one Indian in Vaughan's list.
Michael Vaughan, the former England cricketer picked his all-time playing eleven. However, he had a criterion to follow. He only could have picked players from the 60s until date. And most importantly, he wasn’t allowed to go for more than two players from each decade. Vaughan is currently spending his time at home due to the massive coronavirus pandemic around the entire world.
To start with, he picked the legendary Sir Geoffrey Boycott, who notched over 9,000 runs for England in 144 matches. He then went on to become one of the most popular commentators. From the 70s, Vaughan went for Sir Vivian Richards and Ian Botham. Even as the latter was a quality all-rounder, Richards had the potential of demolishing the best of bowling attacks.
Michael Vaughan picked one specialist spinner
From the 80s, Vaughan zeroed in on Sachin Tendulkar. Though the Mater Blaster started gaining stardom from the 90s, it was in 1989 when he made his debut against Pakistan. He is now the owner of 100 international centuries and retired from the game in 2013. From the same decade, Vaughan also picked Wasim Akram, who is Pakistan’s all-time leading wicket-taker across formats.
Akram was someone, who could generate swing at sheer pace. Adam Gilchrist was Vaughan’s choice from the 90s. He was a dextrous wicketkeeper and a brutal power hitter. In 1999, 2003 and 2011, he was also a part of the Australian World Cup winning squad. Shane Warne was Vaughan’s second pick from the 90s. The spin wizard ended his national career with over 1,000 wickets.
From the 2000s, Vaughan went for Graeme Smith and James Anderson. Even as Smith retired from the game and is currently in administrative role, Anderson is the leading wicket-taker for the Brits in Test cricket. From the 2010s, Vaughan’s pick was Pat Cummins, the fiery fast bowler.
Cummins has been a genuine wicket-taker for the Aussies and has also won a number of awards on the backs of his stupendous shows. He has shown his class equally across formats.
