Michael Vaughan reckons Adil Rashid can play Test cricket, but on one condition
Last year, Rashid shelved his ambition of playing red-ball cricket.
Adil Rashid, the English leg-break bowler, is in the middle of an impressive run in international cricket. He was the joint highest wicket-taker with Moeen Ali in this nation’s home ODI series against Australia. The tweaker nipped out 12 wickets from five matches and was one of their standout bowlers. He also played in the 50-overs matches against India in which he finished with six wickets from three contests.
He is undoubtedly their gun bowler with 141 wickets in 105 limited-overs matches. Moreover, he boasts of economy rates of 5.52 and 7.68 respectively in ODIs and T20Is, which are deemed to be exemplary in today’s generation of slam-bang cricket. The Yorkshire-born cricketer has also played 10 Tests for the Brits and has 38 wickets in the format. Meanwhile, he is currently refraining himself from playing Tests.
Michael Vaughan’s message for Rashid
Last year, he shelved his ambition of playing red-ball cricket and iterated his ambition to focus only on limited-overs cricket. He also opted out of this year’s first-class season and his request was reluctantly accepted. Yorkshire won the championship back in 2014 and 2015 respectively, however, Rashid mentioned that he would be going through the motions if he continues playing white-clothing cricket.
His last first-class appearance was against Middlesex in September 2017. The 30-year-old played his last Test back in 2016 against Virat Kohli’s India at M Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Meanwhile, former English cricketer Michael Vaughan reckons that Rashid can stake his claim back into the Test team provided he starts honing his skills at the domestic level.
He took to Twitter and wrote, “Surely Adil Rashids position is simple … if he commits to playing Red ball cricket for Yorkshire he becomes available for selection !!!! If not he should not be considered …. #OnOn”
