With the current Test series against India increasingly looking out of reach, every act of the Australian team and its fans has come under some form of scrutiny. On Thursday, the host side’s captain Tim Paine had such a moment during a press conference after the day’s play and it did not evade the eyes of former England captain Michael Vaughan. Australia are struggling to save the fourth and final Test match against India in Sydney after the hosts posted a mammoth 622 for 7 in their first innings.
It so happened on Thursday that Paine, also his team’s wicket-keeper, was facing the media questions after a tough day’s of cricket. When the Australian skipper was about to respond, a phone of a journalist called Martin, which was kept in front of him to record his answers, started ringing. Paine surprised everybody by picking up the call and started conversing with the person on the other end.
Paine also advised the caller to call back a little later as the owner of the phone was busy attending the press conference. He also asked the caller whether he needed to pass on any message to Martin upon which the reporter was told to check his email soon. All those who were present in the room started laughing at this.
Tim Paine as captain has found it tough
Paine’s gesture was appraised and Vaughan too mentioned the same though he also reminded the brute reality of Australian cricket at the moment and it is about their terrible run in the current series against India. Australia’s batsmen have let their team down in the first three matches allowing the visitors to take an unassailable 2-1 lead and now have a mountain to climb in Sydney. The bowlers have also failed to bowl out India in three successive innings during which the Indian batsmen scored three hundreds.
All in all, Tim Paine’s captaincy has witnessed a big low in the current series. Paine took over as Australia’s captain in the wake of the Sandpapergate but his captaincy saw some bad losses. In six Tests he has led the Baggy Greens, the team has won just one and recently, he was replaced by Aaron Finch in the ODIs.
Here is Vaughan’s tweet
I like Tim Paine a lot and have a huge amount of respect for the way he is going about his business .. But you know your team are struggling when you are getting praised for answering a phone on a press conference .. #JustSaying
