Andy Murray, the former World No.1 tennis player, shook the tennis fraternity last week with his press conference. The three-time grand slam champion has been struggling from recurring injuries since 2017 which forced him to undergo surgery. Although he made a return to the tour after recovery, he couldn’t make in-roads that he would have liked. Following a period of uncertainty, Murray, in his press conference ahead of the 2019 Australian Open, broke down and hinted at a possible retirement sometime this year, owing to the unbearable physical pain that he has been through.

Murray’s statement created a wave of melancholia in the tennis world and more so among his fans. Reactions have been pouring in from all corners and many considered that the 2019 Australian Open could be his last official tournament. Although the majoritarian view has been such, the other end of the spectrum believes that the former Wimbledon champion is not done yet. One such is his compatriot and former England captain Michael Vaughan.

‘Wait for the player to announce his retirement’

Michael Vaughan took to Twitter and had his say on the buzz around Andy Murray’s retirement. The right-handed batsman emphasized that he felt ‘odd’ and ‘bizarre’ to see people jump into premature conclusions. According to Vaughan, the two-time Olympic Gold medalist hasn’t announced his retirement yet and has only hinted at it. He felt that people have already retired the legendary tennis player off and conclusions shouldn’t be drawn until the man himself makes an announcement.

The tweet from Vaughan reads, “Good to see the rest of the Tennis world has retired Andy Murray off before he announces it himself … That was very very bizarre … Surely you wait for the player to announce his retirement before doing a player montage …”

Murray eyes at reconsidering his retirement plan

Sir Andy Murray played his first match of the 2019 season on Monday. Amidst speculations that it could well be his farewell match, one of the best athletes on the men’s tour walked on to the arena to face Roberto Batista Agut. Murray lost the first two sets and found himself at the brink of a heart-breaking loss. But he, being the champion that he is, made a terrific fight-back and sealed the next two sets. The crowd was right behind him but Batista Agut remained calm under the storm and won the all-important fifth set and eventually the match.

Despite an unfortunate result, Murray felt positive about how hard he fought. He said that he would try his best to continue playing and possibly make a comeback next year in the prestigious Australian Open tournament. “If I want to go again, I’ll need to have a big operation, which there’s no guarantee I’ll be able to come back from anyway, but I’ll give it my best shot”, said Murray during his post-match interview.
