Mitch Marsh, Travis Head to lead 'A' sides on India tour
"We're looking for leaders for future Australian teams, and Travis, Mitch and Alex are all very impressive young men," the chief selector quoted.
Cricket Australia has announced their ‘A’ squads for the upcoming tour of India. Australia A is set to compete in a tri-series against India A and South A in Vijayawada in August 2018. The visiting Australian side will start their campaign against the hosts, India A, on August 17. After the tri-series, the team will play two four-day matches against India A in Vizag as well. The selectors have named Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh as the new leaders of the side.
The selectors have named 28 players across the two squads for the limited overs action and the four-day fixtures. Interestingly, Brendan Doggett and Marnus Labuschagne are the only uncapped players in the squads named. It is no brainer that the Australian selectors are looking at the future by sending out a very strong side.
The chief selector, Trevor Hohns, remarked that the series will serve as an opportunity for players to put their hands up for the Pakistan series that comes up next. Also, Hohns conceded that the management sees Marsh and Travis Head as very potent leaders of the future.
“We’re looking for leaders for future Australian teams, and Travis, Mitch and Alex are all very impressive young men. Travis and Mitch both have captaincy experience at state level, and this is an exciting opportunity for them to lead a new group of players in different conditions. Alex, as our Twenty20 vice-captain in the UK and Zimbabwe, is also someone we rate very highly as a leader, and this is another opportunity for him to develop those skills,” Trevor Hohns conceded.
“With Australia’s series against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates fast approaching, it’s a chance for some players to push for selection for that series, and for all players to gain experience in sub-continent conditions,” Hohns remarked.
