Mitchell Johnson calls it quits from Big Bash League
Johnson will be turning 37 as the Australian summer begins.
One of Australia‘s best bowlers in recent times, Mitchell Johnson has called it quits from the Big Bash League stating fatigue. Johnson, who will turn 37 as the league begins has stated that the intensity is a bit too much for him. The BBL witnesses each team playing 18 matches in the group stages, something that does indeed add a lot of fatigue for someone such as Johnson.
The 36-year old played 18 of the 19 matches in the BBL last season and picked 20 wickets. He impressed quite a bit with some ferocious bowling and was a key member in ensuring that the Perth-based franchise finished on top of the table despite the fact that they could not win the semifinal against the Hobart Hurricanes.
Johnson was also an integral part of the squad that won the 2016-17 edition of the Big Bash League. His best performance came in the same season wherein his performance of 3 for 3 came against Melbourne Stars in the semifinal in 2016-17.
‘Intensity and length is just too much’
Speaking about the same, Johnson’s manager stated that the BBL was just too intensive a tournament for someone who was going to turn 37 at the start of the summer.
“The intensity and length of the BBL is just too much for someone who will be 37 at the start of the summer,” Sam Halvorsen, Johnson’s manager, told The West Australian newspaper. “Mitch has put his name up for the Emirates tournament in Dubai, but that is half the length of the BBL.”
At the moment, Johnson has put his name down for the upcoming T10 league in the UAE which will feature some of the biggest names in T20 cricket. He has also not commented about his participation in the IPL.
