It was not the kind of comeback Mitchell Marsh would have hoped for after being drafted back in the playing eleven for the ongoing third Test against India. The all-rounder could not make it to the eleven after his disastrous show against Pakistan in the UAE where he scored 30 runs and picked up two wickets in two matches.

However, Australia recalled him for the Boxing Day Test to replace the out of form Peter Handscomb. The right-hander was dropped after recording scores of 34, 14, 7 and 13 coming in at number five. The MCG pitch also played a part in Marsh’s recall. However, the MCG crowd was not pleased that Handscomb was dropped for Marsh even though he was out of form.

Marsh himself was not in form. After the poor show in UAE, he had done his reputation no good with some forgettable displays in Sheffield Shield. The 27-year-old had recorded just one score above 50 in seven Sheffield Shield innings since being dropped from the Test side.

And when he replaced hometown boy Handscomb in Melbourne, the fans did not hesitate while venting their disappointment as they booed him at every possible opportunity.

Johnson unhappy

The booing incident, meanwhile, has not gone down well with former Australia bowler Mitchell Johnson. The legendary pacer termed their behaviour as disgusting and asked the fans to support Marsh instead of abusing him.

“This is disgusting, agree with what Saker says. Marsh doesn’t pick the teams, give him some support ffs & those that are saying it’s banter, what a load of rubbish. Constant booing and abuse daily has an effect on people. And yes they get paid well but still no excuse to abuse,” Johnson wrote on Twitter.

Marsh, meanwhile, did a commendable job on day one of the game bowling on a lifeless pitch. He was mainly picked to ease the burden on Australia’s overworked trio of fast bowlers and the allrounder played his part to perfection. He bowled a disciplined line throughout the day to help restrict India’s scoring rate to just 2.41 for the day. Marsh ended the day as Australia’s most economical bowler, bowling 15 overs for just 23 run.
