Ever since his rise in Australian cricket Mitchell Starc has outshined every other fast bowler in the country and to an extent around the world as well with the sheer quality of his bowling. The only thing that has undone him and has kept him away from a lot more glory that he deserves is his own body. Fitness issues and reoccurring injuries have kept him off the field a lot more than he or for that matter, Australian fans would have liked.

The Australian summer is just about to kick start with the South African team touring down under for a three-Test series and Starc still has an unhealed wound on his leg with just over a week’s time left before the series gets underway. But despite all that former Australian pacer, Mitchell Johnson believes Starc will continue to find success in the approaching season.

Speaking to Fairfax Media, Johnson said, “I said to someone the other day, he will overtake Dennis and (me) and he will do that pretty quickly. He will be contesting Dale Steyn’s record. Dale has played 80-odd Tests and has 400. Starc is on that track at the moment. He is getting five wickets a Test. He has got the pace and he has got the bounce. He is going to be in his prime over the next few years which makes it even more scary.”

Only 13 bowlers have managed to get past the 400-wicket mark in Tests and only two of those South Africa’s Dale Steyn and England pace spearhead James Anderson are active in the game at this point in time. Two of Australia’s greatest bowlers spin wizard Shane Warne and the most successful pacer from the country Glenn McGrath also find themselves in that list and Johnson is of the opinion that Starc too has it in him to be named along the legends.

“His (Starc’s) one-day and short-form results have been awesome but it was in Tests that he didn’t get that rhythm. He kept coming in and out of the team and he had a season, when I first came back into the team, against Sri Lanka in 2012, where he got dropped for that Boxing Day Test because they needed to rest him.” Johnson added.

He hopes that the young pacer doesn’t fall to another freakish injury and if he manages to keep himself fit everything seems to be on the right track. “The rotation thing was holding him back – he wasn’t getting consistent cricket. Now that he is playing and fortunately he didn’t sustain any major injury with that freak accident, he is on top of his game.” he concluded saying.
