One of the fastest bowlers in cricket history, Mitchell Johnson, stood out among the leading wicket-takers for Australia despite seeing through many ups and downs in his International career that spanned over a decade. Johnson made a sensational comeback in the 2013 Ashes guiding the Aussies to whitewash England and regain the Urn after an eight-year gap.
On occasion of Mitchell Johnson’s 36th birthday, we look at all the numbers he produced in International cricket:
1 – He is the only Australian to score 500 runs and take 50 wickets in a calendar year in Test cricket. Johnson recorded this double in 2008 where he exactly scored 500 runs and took 63 wickets. Only six other players have done this double in Tests.
2 – He is only next to Shane Warne for taking 300 wickets and score 2000 runs in Test cricket for Australia. Overall, he is the 13th player with the double of 2000+ runs and 300+ wickets in this format. Johnson is also one of the 15th players in International cricket with 3000 runs and 500 wickets.
3 – Mitch, Kapil Dev and Ravindra Jadeja are the only three players who have 500 runs and 50 wickets to their name in a single season in Test cricket. He scored 527 runs and took 60 wickets in the 2008/09 Test season.
8/61 – Johnson’s bowling figures of 8/61 against South Africa in the 1st innings of the Perth Test are the best bowling figures for any left-arm fast bowler in Test cricket. He is the only left-arm pacer to take eight wickets in a Test inning.
37 – Number of wickets he picked up in the 2013/14 Ashes Test series. These are the 9th most for any player in an Ashes series and the most by a fast bowler since the start of 1990.
80 – Number of wickets Mitchell Johnson has picked in the 4th innings in Test cricket. These are the 2nd most wickets for any fast bowler after Glenn McGrath (103) and the 6th most overall in the 4th innings.
313 – His 313 wickets in Test cricket are the 4th most by any player in Test cricket for Australia. He is one of the five players to take over 300 wickets in this format for the Aussies.
313 – The 313 Test wickets by Johnson are the 3rd most for a left-arm pacer after Wasim Akram (414) and Chaminda Vaas (355). He is one of the four left-arm fast bowlers to take 500 wickets in International cricket. Akram, Vaas and Zaheer Khan are the other three left-arm pacers with over 500 International wickets.
590 – Number of wickets he picked in International cricket. These are the 4th most wicket by any Australian across all formats. Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath and Brett Lee have picked up over 700 wickets across the three formats in International cricket for Australia.
