Veteran England all-rounder Moeen Ali announced retirement from Test cricket in order to focus on white-ball matches. The southpaw made the major announcement on Monday (September 27). In a video shared on Chennai Super Kings’ Twitter page, the left-handed batsman talked about his Test career and answered some queries. From throwing light on his decision to talking about his most-cherished knock in the format, Ali talked about his many things.
On being asked about his experience of playing in Chennai during the Test series earlier this year, Ali said he could recall only two things. While one of them is the crowd cheering relentlessly, the other is the fans asking him about ‘Valimai Update.’ For the unversed, Valimai is an upcoming Tamil movie starring veteran actor Ajith Kumar.
With the release date of the action-thriller delaying continuously, fans left no platform untouched to get a glimpse of Valimai update. During the Chennai Test between England and India, fans were seen placard with ‘Valimai Update,’ written over it. Speaking of the same, Ali said: “Somebody kept asking me about Valimai update or something.”

Notably, Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin had also revealed Ali asked him about Valimai update. “I was standing at the boundary line when I heard someone calling me ‘Thala Ashwin… Ashwin..’ When I responded, the person asked me, ‘What about Valimai update?’ The next day, Moeen (Ali) asked me what is Valimai? Looks like the same crowd asked him about Valimai update too,” Ashwin had revealed.
Meanwhile, Ali, who played 64 Tests for England, said he wasn’t confident enough of delivering in the upcoming Ashes.
“There was part of me thinking about the Ashes this winter. I would have loved to go back and do well because last time I didn’t do so well. But I just felt like I couldn’t do it for that long. It’s such a long trip if I’m not ‘in it’. If I felt like I did in India when I was out there, then I would probably retire after one match. So it’s done,” ESPNcricinfo quoted him as per saying.
Ali is currently plying his trade for CSK in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. The southpaw was on a roll in the first half and would like to shine in the UAE leg as well. So far, he has scored 261 runs alongside scalping 5 wickets in nine outings. He, thus, has been instrumental in taking the MS Dhoni-led to the playoffs. With the tournament being in its business end, Ali would like to continue his sensational run.
