The Australians reclaimed the prestigious Urn after taking a magnificent 3-0 lead in the Ashes 2017-18 series. Aussie captain Steve Smith has led his troops to a commanding and dominant series victory in his first ever Ashes as the leader of the side. On the other hand, the visiting English team has lacked the intensity to compete at this level and moreover their experienced big guns have failed to grab the opportunities coming their way in the crucial series down under.
Former Australian cricketer Michael Hussey feels that the position of England’s frontline spinner Moeen Ali is under serious scanner after consistent failures with both bat and ball.
The Ashes 2017-18 series so far has gone in the appropriate manner for the hosts as their all their batsman have scored runs including skipper Smith who already has two big hundreds to his name and all the bowlers have bowled extremely well too. But as far as the visitors are concerned, they needed the experienced guys like Alastair Cook, skipper Joe Root, all-rounder Moeen Ali to stand up in and perform when their team needed it the most. The English bowling attacked also looks a bit rusty and inconsistent in the series so far.
Ali’s position is in danger
Hussey stated that if Ali’s role in this England team is that of the leading spinner then surely his spot in the team is in danger. In the series so far, Ali has failed consistently with the bat as he has not able to convert the starts into a big score which the team desperately needed from him every time he stepped out on the field. His bowling performance is a serious thing to worry as the off-spinner has just picked up three wickets in the three Tests, while the opposition spinner Nathan Lyon has bowled extremely well.
“If his role is to be a frontline spinner then his position is definitely in danger,” said Hussey as quoted by cricket.com.au
The former Aussie batsman revealed that if Ali is playing as a batsman who can bowl a few overs then he needs to contribute with more runs for his team. He personally feels that the English all-rounder is a good batsman who can also deliver with the ball in hand. Hussey mentioned the fact that he is not a proper bowler who give you five wickets in good conditions in Australia.
“But if he’s a batsman that can help out with the ball, he’d certainly like a few more runs, but maybe he’s got a bit more rope. In my mind, he’s a very good batsman who can help out with the ball. In good conditions like we have in Australia, he’s not going to run through a team and take five wickets,” Mr Cricket added.
