Mohammad Amir had an obligation of helping Pakistan cricket in tough times: Mohammad Asif

Mohammad Asif, the former Pakistan fast bowler, said that Mohammad Amir didn’t do justice to Pakistan cricket after making a comeback. Back in the 2016 Asia Cup, the left-armer returned to international cricket following the shambolic spot-fixing scandal at the Lord’s Cricket Ground back in 2010. Even as Amir staked his claim back, Asif’s career was literally over after the body blow.

Asif mentioned that Amir has failed the ones, who helped him revive his career for Pakistan. Asif was of the opinion that the southpaw shouldn’t have retired from Test cricket last year, especially when the team is going through a turbulent phase in the longest format. The 37-year-old Asif also didn’t mince any words in saying that Amir wasn’t the ‘toughest bowler to handle’.

“I curse the PCB for how they rescued his career. But it was his obligation to help Pakistan cricket in a tough situation and he should have stayed, especially when they had helped him return,” Asif was quoted as saying in ESPNcricinfo. After Amir hung his boots from Test cricket, he was greeted with backlash from former cricketers like Wasim Akram and Shoaib Akhtar.

“Anyway, it’s the PCB’s decision to let him go, but if he is meant to leave Test cricket at this age, it really is a curse upon those who fought so hard to bring him back. And did anyone ever take Amir’s name, saying he was the toughest bowler to handle? Definitely no,” he stated.

“It’s about how compassionate you are. If the PCB invested so much in you then it’s your duty to rescue them in Test cricket. If they had done the same with me, then I’d still be available to rescue Pakistan in Test cricket for the next two years,” Asif added.

Asif also said about how he never got support from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) despite being regarded as one of the best. As per Asif, a number of players were involved in fixing and some of them are even working with the PCB. Nevertheless, he takes pride in the performances he dished out at the highest level.
