Pakistan left-arm fast bowler Mohammad Amir was the talk of the town until very recently for his spectacular return to international cricket following a ban. Amir was part of the trio who were disgraced for being involved in the spot-fixing scandal that rocked the sport. However, the quick turned a new leaf after serving his ban and made a spectacular comeback.
Amir grew from strength to strength reaching a pinnacle during the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy where he paved the way for an emphatic Pakistan victory. The seamer snaffled the key wickets of Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli en route Pakistan’s 180-run triumph over defending champions India. He finished with remarkable figures of 3 for 16 in the all-important final.
He was well and truly back to international cricket and showed all the signs of a matured and determined fast bowler, coupled with his pace and swing which he naturally possessed as a 19-year old.
However, the fairytale return for the Pakistani took a slight hit, simply because his bowling didn’t seem to be as effective as before. Amir went wicketless for matches together and was unimpressive during the recently concluded Asia Cup. He was subsequently dropped from Pakistan’s sides for the series against Australia. While he takes a break from international cricket, former Pakistani pacer Azhar Mahmood believes this will only make him a stronger bowler.
Pressure causing self-doubts in Amir’s ability
While speaking to Pak Passion, Mahmood mentioned that Mohammad Amir has been struggling a bit since his return. However, he reiterated his fascinating wicket-taking ability, which naturally makes him side’s one of the key bowlers. “But, he is not taking wickets and that pressure to perform is creating issues for him. This is then causing some self-doubts on his own ability which is why him not playing in the next series against Australia will give him that much-needed break from this high pressure,” he said.
“He can now go back to domestic cricket in a relaxed frame of mind and work on some technical issues such as his wrist position. We have told him exactly what he needs to do to remedy his problems and he will work on fixing the issues when he plays in domestic cricket and I believe he will come back to international cricket as a better bowler,” the former cricketer added.
