Mohammad Asif was one of the Pakistan cricketers, who was suspended in the infamous spot-fixing scandal during the Lord’s Test in England, along with Mohammad Amir and Salman Butt, the then captain. However, the 36-year-old speedster from Sheikhupura, Punjab recently made his comeback on the cricket pitch and has put up some strong performances.
In the Departmental One Day Cup, Asif finished with three wickets from five matches with an economy of 4.72. He was even more impressive in the Quaid-e-Azam trophy as he picked up 18 wickets from four games at an average of 17.61 and an economy rate of 2.75.
During the tournament, he also picked up a couple of five-wicket hauls. In the meantime, the veteran is somewhat dissatisfied with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and mentioned that he has been completely ignored despite performing well in the domestic circuit.
It is double standards from the PCB
“I performed very well in the previous domestic season, picking up some 45 wickets in seven matches. However, no one called me up and I am getting completely ignored, which is unjust and should not happen,” Asif was quoted as saying in Business Recorder.
Asif also remarked that every person should be treated equally, exemplifying Amir’s name. Amir made his national comeback three years ago in the 2016 Asia Cup in Bangladesh. Furthermore, Asif accused the country’s cricket board of double standards.
“If you are giving opportunities to one person [Mohammad Amir], others should be given the same opportunity as well. It is double standards from the Pakistan Cricket Board [PCB] and cricket selectors as well,” the experienced cricketer added.
Pakistan recently lost the Test, ODI and T20I series against South Africa. The red-ball fixtures were one-sided, but the visitors gave the home team a run for its money in the limited-overs series. Pakistan are next scheduled to lock horns with England in one T20I and five ODIs in May, a few days before the 2019 Cricket World Cup in England and Wales.
