NEW DELHI, INDIA – NOVEMBER 8: Former Indian cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin at his home at Lodhi Estate on November 8, 2012 in New Delhi, India. The Andhra Pradesh High Court lifted life ban on him. He was ordered to never play cricket again after he was falsely accused of match-fixing in December 2000. Former India skipper Mohammad Azharuddin is one of the few players who is interested in an administrative job behind the desk similar to the likes of Sourav Ganguly who currently serves as the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB). However, in spite of this, the former Indian skipper is interested in standing in the Hyderabad Cricket Association elections.

It is learned that Azharuddin is planning a coup with Arshad Ayub, the incumbent president well and truly on the way out. When approached and asked about it, the former Indian skipper was unwilling to disclose any information and stated that he was only planning on standing for the upcoming election. “I am planning to contest in the HCA election. But nothing has been finalized.”

Arshad Ayub is in the middle of a scam that involves a massive monetary scam. Being the president, he will most certainly be answerable to the ongoing audit. The ACB (Anti-Corruption Bureau) has also made a massive crackdown on the HCA in recent times with the BCCI also heeding to the recommendations made by the Lodha panel.

Many have alleged that the Hyderabad Cricket Association has been laundering money allocated to them by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to purchase cars and jewelry. The Goa Cricket Association, as well as the Odisha Cricket Association, are implicated in the scam as well.

As far as Mohammad Azharuddin goes, the only blemish on his near-perfect record is the fact that he has been implicated in a match-fixing scandal. Towards the close of his career, he was implicated in a scandal along with the late Hansie Cronje and Herschelle Gibbs. More importantly, Azharuddin has also won the case of the match-fixing allegation against BCCI. So it should not be difficult for him to contest in HCA election.

And if it happens finally, then after Saurav Ganguly, Indian cricket will have another star who will be sitting on administrator’s chair.
