Mohammad Azharuddin, one of the most successful captains for India over the years also holds the record for winning the most Tests and ODIs as an Indian captain.
Azharuddin had scored over fifteen thousand runs from One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Test matches. He represented India in 334 ODIs and 99 Test matches and had led the Indian team for the most part of the 1990s. Azhar is the only batsman who has three centuries in each of his first three Tests.
When we look back to his international career, he had created his own identity and Azhar’s collar-up look is one is a trademark sign of him. Many who watched him might have assumed that Azhar was only trying to show his swag through this mannerism of lifting up his collar and playing. However, he revealed the reason to a radio channel named Fever 104 FM.
“While fielding at point, I used to have problems in my neck skin because of the exposure to the sun. Hence, I decided to raise my collar as protection and it became a habit,” said the former Indian captain.
Another important aspect which we would associate with Mohammad Azharuddin is the white helmet he used during a time when helmets were not mandatory and rare, he made wearing the white helmet another habit.
“I had a liking for white helmet since we used it a lot during playing Tests. And since there was no compulsion of using a blue helmet, I played with a white one,” he said.
