Mohammad Irfan puts his hand up for the selection in the national team
He also opined that the there is no replacement for senior players.
Pakistan’s premature exit from the ongoing Asia Cup has certainly put a few players’ places in danger now. They were touted as favourites when the tournament started but they couldn’t perform collectively as a team. The bowlers especially which is a stronger suit for them over the years, struggled to take wickets against stronger oppositions like India. However, Mohammad Irfan has put his hand up for the selection claiming that he is fully fit and available whenever the team needs up.
He was recently in the news for bowling the most economical spell in the history of the T20 cricket in the Carribean Premier League (CPL). The lanky fast bowler last played for Pakistan a couple of years and has been sidelined since then due to frequent injury troubles. He has so far played 60 ODIs and has picked 83 wickets at an impressive average and economy rate.
Irfan claims that he was never dropped from the team and it was his fitness which troubled him every now and then. He also believed that he deserves one more chance after performing well in the domestic circuit.
“I was never dropped from the team on the basis of performances, instead it was my fitness issues due to which I am out of the national squad But thanks to Almighty, I am recovered now and fully fit to deliver for the national team. My performances in the domestic circuit and international leagues are good enough to prove my claims,” he said while speaking to The National.
I won’t let down the team
Mohammad Irfan, 36, has his age going against him but he promises to not let down his team and the country. He was also confident of his fitness and has put forth his case now for the team selection. “I am fully fit and available for selection. I promise I won’t let down the team and nation, instead I will try my best to spearhead bowling and will destroy any given batting order. I am determined to prove my worth once again,” he added.
Meanwhile, the coach Mickey Arthur is adamant about giving youngsters more opportunities as they are more fit compared to the senior players. But Irfan pointed out how Shoaib Malik is making the difference to the team even at the age of 36 and opined that there is no replacement for experienced and senior players.
