Pakistan defeated West Indies in the third T20I and completed a whitewash over the former world champions. During this game, Mohammad Rizwan became the only player to score over 2000 runs in T20 in a calendar year. During Pakistan’s dream run in the T20 World Cup 2021, he also became the first player to cross the 1000-runs mark in a calendar year in T20Is.
Rizwan is currently the hottest prospect in world cricket and has earned a contract with the Sussex club for the upcoming season. It will be his first stint with a county team. He will be playing both in the T20 Blast and County Cricket and be joining the team from early April.
“I am absolutely honoured and excited to be a part of the historic Sussex County Cricket Club for the 2022 season. I have always heard great things about the Sussex community and this family club was always close to my heart,” Rizwan said as quoted by Cricbuzz.
Sussex’s coach Ian Salisbury welcomed Rizwan and applauded his T20s and Test cricket records.
“Mohammad’s first-class and Test records speak for themselves and it’s a huge coup to welcome him to Sussex for a big chunk of next season’s Championship,” mentioned Salisbury.
Sussex released former captain Ben Brown
Sussex have released former captain Ben Brown after his request, while he still had two years left in his contract. The 33-years-old wicketkeeper played 12 county games in 2021 and made 976 runs at an average of 51.36.
In the mid of the season, Brown was replaced as captain of the Sussex team by Tom Haines. This came as a shocker for him as he spent his entire cricketing career at Sussex. He was picked by Sussex at the age of 12 years and spent 22 years at his home county. Brown played in 318 games for Sussex across all formats and made 10,843 runs.
“As this chapter of my career draws to a close, I would like to say an enormous thank you to Sussex for the opportunities I have been afforded over a 22-year association with club,” Brown said after Sussex confirmed his release.
“Ben has been part of Sussex for over two decades and has a record he can be extremely proud of. He has always given everything with the bat, the gloves or with his captaincy.” Sussex’s Chief Executive Rob Andrew said.
