Mohammad Shahzad emulates his idol with brilliant work behind the stumps
Dhoni would be pleased to see Shahzad do that!
In the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), Afghanistan’s wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Shahzad emulated Indian great Mahendra Singh Dhoni as he affected a run out in the latter’s signature fashion while playing for Chittagong Vikings. Shahzad, an admirer of former Indian skipper has often tried playing the helicopter shot, but matching Dhoni’s skills with gloves was something new for every cricket fan.
In the game against Dhaka Dynamite (DD), the Chittagong Vikings had posted 174 runs on the board, with Cameron Delport playing sensational innings of 71 runs. In reply, DD lost two wickets in quick succession with Abu Jayed managing to get rid of Sunil Narine and Rony Talukdar in his first two overs.
With this, DD were eyeing a partnership, but one will have to say, the thought just didn’t turn into reality as Shahzad got rid of Mizanur Rahman. The dismissal took place in the fourth over when Rahman tried to up the scoring rate and came down the track against spinner Nayeem Hasan.
Looking to whip it away, the 27-year-old got an inside edge onto his pads, unfortunately for him, he didn’t realize where the ball was. It was exactly in between the batsman and stumps, rolling towards the strike-end. While he was searching, Mohammad Shahzad was quick enough to intercept it at the moment and he got to the ball quickly and back-flicked it onto the stumps, similar to what we’ve often seen MS Dhoni do.
Bamboozled, Rahman looked towards the square leg umpire. He went upstairs to the third umpire who signalled ‘out’ as Rahman wasn’t able to ground his bat in time. As a result, the opener had to take a long walk back to the pavilion, making his team’s position even worse.

Losing three wickets early in the innings, Dhaka Dynamites were always on backfoot and eventually fell 11 runs short of Chittagong’s total. Victory against DD has helped Vikings occupy the third spot in the points table, with still one game to go.
