Pakistan have struggled throughout the South African tour but life has been much better for them in the limited-overs formats. The visitors are world no.1 in the T20I rankings so the expectations were high from them coming into this series. The first T20I of was a close encounter as South Africa edged past the Men in Green to win by just six runs. Pakistan lost quite a few wickets in the middle overs including one of the wicketkeeper, Mohammed Rizwan who was run out once he ran out of luck.

Shoaib Malik won the toss and invited the hosts to bat first. Pakistani bowlers failed to back the decision of their captain as Reeza Hendricks and Faf du Plessis put the hosts in a great position. A flurry of wickets, in the end, meant that Pakistan were able to restrict South Africa for a score less than 200. While Pakistan might have been happy with their effort in the death, the target was still huge.

Pakistan got off to a good start as Babar Azam and Hussain Talat provided a good foundation to the team. Malik was in great form but apart from him, there was very little contribution from Pakistan middle and lower order. David Miller was fantastic in the field as he took four catches and affected two run outs including one of Mohammed Rizwan.

Rizwan out of luck

Shoaib Malik was facing Andile Phehlukwayo on the last ball of the 17th over. The right-handed batsman tried to hit a big shot but ended up miscuing it. It was an easy catch for Beuran Hendricks at short third man but the South African fast bowler managed to make a mess of it. Then he had an opportunity of running out Mohammed Rizwan with a direct hit, he put in a desperate dive but it missed the stumps.

There was more action left as the two batsmen saw that no one was backing up and tried to steal an extra run. But David Miller who seemed like a man possessed on the field that day was up to the task as he came running to pick the ball and fired a direct hit to run out Rizwan. Malik tried his best but Pakistan eventually fell short of the target. Miller was awarded man of the match award for his fielding effort.
