Mohammed Siraj first came to the limelight during this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL) on the back of some impressive bowling. Thereafter, he backed it up with some sterling performances at the domestic level. He has been a part of the India A team as well as thus made his way to the T20I squad. The fast bowler was eventually able to convince the selectors and was drafted into the Indian team for their T20 International series against New Zealand.
He didn’t get a game at the Feroz Shah Kotla in New Delhi but went on to make his debut in the second T20I in Rajkot. Donning the Indian colours is an occasion of pride for any cricketer and it was no different for the pacer from Hyderabad. After the customary national anthem, that was played before the game, Siraj got emotional and was unable to hold on to his emotions.

A not so happy debut for Siraj
The pitch at Rajkot turned out to be a graveyard for the bowlers and they found it difficult to put a lid on the scoring. Siraj turned out to be pretty expensive with bowling figures of 4-0-53-1. He bowled some wonderful deliveries, but couldn’t stop the likes of Colin Munro and Martin Guptill from taking him to the cleaners. During his spell, he got the wicket of New Zealand skipper and his teammate in the Sunrisers Hyderabad team- Kane Williamson.
He eventually turned out to be the third most expensive bowler on debut in T20Is after James Anderson and Joginder Sharma’s spell against Australia and England respectively. Siraj replaced Ashish Nehra after the left-arm seamer decided to bid adieu to international cricket.
With the series against Sri Lanka and South Africa ahead of them, Team India has a hectic schedule in line for the next three months. It will be interesting to find out Siraj’s fate in international cricket after a not so joyful debut for the fast bowler.
