Mohinder Amarnath could be India’s next Chief selector: According to media reports doing rounds Mohinder Amarnath could be back at the helm of affairs in the BCCI as India’s next chief selector in September when the new selection committee is constituted. Amarnath made a controversial exit after reports suggested that he wanted Mahendra Singh Dhoni to step down as captain after India lost eight Tests on-the-trot in Australia and England. Insiders say BCCI boss N. Srinivasan was not amused at Amarnath’s proposal of doing away with MS Dhoni’s Test captaincy and got him dropped.
With Dhoni now out of the skipper’s role in the Tests and Virat Kohli being the new skipper, Amarnath will prefer the current situation but if the reports of him returning as the chief selector turn out to be true, it would be interesting to see how he deals with Dhoni, who is still the skipper in the limited-over format of the game. Dhoni stepped down as Test captain after the Boxing Day Test at MCG in December 2014.
With Srinivasan out, the new management at BCCI are keen to bring back Amarnath. The former allrounder was once expected to be the next India coach but lost out to Greg Chappel on his lack of knowledge in handling computers. He also came into limelight when he called the selectors “a bunch of jokers” after he was dropped from the national team.
Other reports also suggested former Indian captain Dilip Vengsarkar could also return as a selector. His first stint lasted two years from 2006 to 2008. Vengsarkar is now a vice-president of the Mumbai Cricket Association. Meanwhile, former India wicketkeeper-batsman Deep Dasgupta is a strong contender for the post of national selector from East Zone when Saba Karim’s tenure ends in September this year. According to well-placed sources, the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), whose turn it is to select the candidate from East Zone, wants Dasgupta but another former Bengal captain Devang Gandhi’s name might also be discussed.
