Monty Panesar signs for Sydney-based cricket club

34-year old Monty Panesar may have been left out of the England side following the rise of Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid. However, that will certainly not stop him as he has renewed his contract with Sydney’s Premier Cricket competition after signing a contract for what is now his third club Campbelltown – Campden.

He will be expected to lead the spin attack for Campden Cricket Club for the upcoming season. He has previously played with Randwick-Petersham in 2011-12, and with Western Suburbs in 2013-14.

Panesar is a veteran of a few Ashes series having made tours to Australia before he was eventually dropped for poor performances. Panesar is also well-known by most England cricket fans courtesy of his ‘overboard’ celebrations especially after picking up wickets at will. He has featured for England in just 50 Test matches, the last of which came in the 2013 edition of the Ashes series, wherein he played his final Test in the Boxing Day Test match in Melbourne.

The 2013 edition of the Ashes is something that continues to haunt England cricket. This series saw left-arm pacer Mitchell Johnson run riot against a feeble England as the ‘Pomms’ were thrashed out of sight 5-0, thus conceding the Ashes to Australia.

Club secretary Jason Ellsmore stated that he was indeed over the moon after securing of Panesar for the upcoming season. “It’s very safe to say he’s the highest profile player at our club in at least the last 20 years,” Ellsmore told News Ltd, adding the club was expecting inflated crowds for the summer.

“His presence is sure to generate a lot of interest and hopefully he can win us a few games.

“I think him playing will really cement the credibility of Campbelltown and cricket in Sydney.”
