The role of the wicketkeeper in any format of the game plays a vital part. Especially in a global T20 tournament like the Indian Premier League (IPL), a single mistake by a wicketkeeper can dampen the chances of a team in crucial stages of a game. On the other hand, a brilliant vigilant guard by a wicketkeeper can help the team dominate the opposition.

Hence, the role not only involves being cautious and sharp behind the stumps but it also involves displaying some exceptional reflex action to convert a minimal chance into a dismissal out of nowhere.

In the same vein, let's have a look at five wicketkeepers who have effected most dismissals in the IPL:

5. Robin Uthappa

Though Robin Uthappa has not regularly kept wickets for his IPL teams, he possesses impressive numbers with the gloves. He has effected 90 dismissals in the league history, out of which 58 are catches and 32 are stumpings. He is third among keepers in terms of most stumpings in the league. He had announced his retirement after featuring in the 2022 edition of the IPL alongside winning the title twice.

4. Rishabh Pant

Having been appointed the full time skipper of Delhi Capitals midway through the 2021 season, Pant led them to a table topping finish in the league stage but theu could make the final, and haven't qualified for the playoffs since. But Pant, who first played for Capitals in 2016 and has spent his entire IPL career with them has so far made 95 dismissals in 101 innings as a wicketkeeper. 72 of these have been catches and the remaining have been stumpings. He is fourth on the all-time leaderboard in all three of these aspects. He will hope that he can turn things around for his franchise as he is expected to continue at the helm.

3. Wriddhiman Saha

Wriddhiman Saha is considered among the best keepers behind the wicket  cricket right now. He has shown his skills with the gloves in IPL as well. He has effected a total of 113 dismissals in the cash-rich league including 87 catches and 26 stumpings. He performed brilliantly with the bat for SRH at the top of the order in the 2020 season. But he is mostly remembered for his century in the Final of the 2014 edition for Kings XI Punjab(now Punjab Kings), albeit in a losing cause.

2. Dinesh Karthik

Dinesh Karthik is among the most experienced players in the cash-rich league. He has played a total of 235 innings in the IPL as a wicketkeeper, in which he has effected 174 dismissals including 137 catches and 37 stumpings. In all three of these aspects, Karthik, who announced his retirement from all forms of cricket at the end of IPL 2024, is at second place. Karthik has also reecently ventured into the commentary box and recieved unanimous love from the fans behind the mic.

1. MS Dhoni

The former Indian captain MS Dhoni has proved his mettle as a wicketkeeper in his long career. He has recorded the most number of dismissals (190) in IPL so far. Among these, 148 are catches and the rest 42 are stumpings. Dhoni has played as a specialist wicketkeeper in all the seasons of IPL from the very start in 2008. He played a pivotal role in CSK’s success over the years both as a captain and a keeper. As always, no one actually knows whether "Thala" will hang up his boots after IPL 2024, but most fans will probably want to see him again.
