Most overrated XI of current cricketers

It takes a lot of effort to play in the international circuit. There are only 11 players who can take part in a side. There are only 4 reserve players to add to the bench strength in most cases, unless it’s a big overseas tour and you get a bigger squad. One has to be an extremely efficient player in order to play in a side. When it’s a team like India or Australia or England, one has to buckle up for sure. However, there are some players who get lucky. They are not as talented or they haven’t been able to perform much in the chances they get. From the current lot of players, there are many of such and here is a playing XI out of them. The overrated XI from current cricketers 1. Liton Das Liton Das. (Photo Source: Twitter) There’s no doubt that Liton Das is a very talented player. He has got those textbook shots which makes people admire him. The only problem is, he puts up a good performance once in a blue moon. The Bangladeshi player has been featuring across formats for three years straight. He has played 24 Tests, 44 ODIs and 32 T20Is. To add it all up, he has played a 100 international games. But ever since day one, he has been very inconsistent. While he’s still been decent in Tests in recent times, he has been terribly out of touch in the limited-overs formats. Despite all of it, he captained Bangladeshi T20I side in one of the matches recently. Why is he getting so many chances? Only Bangladeshi team management can answer it. 2. Kraigg Braithwaite Kraigg Brathwaite. (Photo Source: Getty Images) He is the captain of West Indies‘ Test team. Kraigg is a gifted player without a shadow of a doubt. He has shown it as a batsman in a lot of Tests for the Caribbean, which is why the team has a lot of faith in him. But in recent years, Braithwaite hasn’t been able to do so well. His Test average is just 33 which is concerning for a player of his calibre. In fact, he didn’t hit a single century in spite of featuring in 11 Test matches in the last two years. Brathwaite showed some sign of form earlier this year against Sri Lanka, but the concern remains the same for him. He will have to do a lot better than this to lead the West Indies from the front. As of now, he’s one of the most overrated openers in the cricketing world. 3. Marnus Labuschagne Marnus Labuschagne. (Photo by Lee Warren/Gallo Images/Getty Images) No, don’t get it wrong. Marnus Labuschagne is a very fine cricketer without a shadow of a doubt. He has done remarkably well in Test cricket. He is also one of the fastest batsmen to get to 1000 runs in Tests. It’s his selection into the ODI setup which can be questioned at times. He has scored 473 runs in 12 innings which includes a century as well. With an average of 39.42 and a strike rate of 91, these should be considered pretty good numbers. But he has been included into the side ahead of Peter Handscomb and Travis Head in Australia‘s ODI side. While Labuschagne is effective in ODIs, these two batsmen can turn out to be match winners. The fact that he got included into ODI side based on his Test form raises a lot of eyebrows. 4. Dinesh Chandimal Dinesh Chandimal. (Photo Source: Twitter) Dinesh Chandimal has to be one of the most consistent batsmen for Sri Lanka who debuted in the last decade. He has shown it by scoring runs in countries like England, West Indies, New Zealand. But even when he was the captain of the side, he failed to lead from the front. The urge to win matches should be the most in a captain. But when Chandimal would lead the side, he would be really defensive, often dropping himself down the order. With time, his form dipped as well. He made a return to all formats after World Cup 2019 but it would be an understatement that he hasn’t lived up to his potential. You cannot think of a single memorable innings on his part in the last couple of years. It’s surprising how Sri Lanka persisted with him. 5. Temba Bavuma Temba Bavuma. (Photo Source: Twitter) Temba Bavuma has recently been made the captain of South Africa‘s limited overs side. He took over the reins from Quinton de Kock after the latter had a terrible run as the leader. But how did Temba get himself to that position? He has played only nine ODIs till now although his performance has been solid in it with two centuries already. It’s his Test career which can be questioned. Bavuma has played 44 games for his nation in the longest format. But out of 73 innings, he has been able to score just one century. His highest score in Test cricket is 102 which proves that he can’t score big. For a player leading South Africa, these are pretty average numbers. 6. Tim Paine (C & WK) Tim Paine. (Photo by PATRICK HAMILTON/AFP via Getty Images) There’s a lot of talk about how Tim Paine is as a player. It’s very late in his career that he has finally been getting his chances consistently. All of a sudden after the sandpaper incident, he was made the captain of the Aussie side. There’s nothing but respect for the guy to lead Australia during a time when it was at its worst. He did well as a captain early on, showing some serious leadership skills. But he wasn’t able to keep up with it and it’s surprising that he’s still the captain when Smith and Warner are back. Tim Paine is yet to score a century in Test cricket, and he was axed from the ODI side after a terrible run in 2018. His wicketkeeping performances haven’t been up to the mark recently. It’s surprising he hasn’t been dropped from the playing XI just yet, although it might be on the cards if he doesn’t perform in the next Test series for Australia. 7. Faheem Ashraf Faheem Ashraf of Pakistan. (Photo by Francois Nel/Getty Images) Ashraf has been backed by Pakistan as an all-rounder. They have been providing him chances across formats. It’s safe to say that they have set their eyes on him as their No. 1 pace all-rounder. While his run in Test cricket has been pretty decent, his form in limited-overs cricket has been questionable, especially in ODIs. He has an average of 12 as a batsman and 41 as a bowler. In T20Is, he has an average of 11 in 29 innings with a strike rate of 128. Faheem Ashraf had a strong showing in PSL last season. It’s still surprising that he gets consistent chances in ODIs and T20Is when Pakistan can clearly afford someone else ahead of him. 8. Mehidy Hasan Miraz Mehidy Hasan. (Photo by MUNIR UZ ZAMAN/AFP via Getty Images) Mehedi Hasan has been the first option for Bangladesh in Test cricket. He has proved the choice correct with his performances. He has already scored a century in Tests along with seven fifers. In ODIs, his performances have been pretty decent too. He bats down the order but has managed to score a half century. Having picked 54 wickets in 49 innings, the stats have not been bad in this format either. It’s his T20I career which has been not impressive. He hasn’t been able to score even a single good innings in this format. In 13 innings, he has picked up just 4 wickets at an average of 82.5. 9. Isuru Udana Isuru Udana. (Photo by Lee Warren/Gallo Images/Getty Images) Udana is a left-arm pacer who has been a regular part of the Sri Lankan side. He had some good batting performances in early 2019 to make it into the world cup side as a bowler. But doesn’t that sound all wrong? Isuru Udana has played 20 ODI games, which is enough for someone to improve himself. In these 20 matches, he has been able to pick up just 18 wickets. He has been very expensive and his bowling average is a massive 51. Nothing spectacular about his numbers in T20Is either. With 24 wickets in 27 games, there’s a lot left to be desired. Even though he has been a miss throughout his career, he still finds himself in the playing XI every now and then. Why? That remains a mystery. 10. Shadab Khan Shadab Khan and Shan Masood. (Photo Source: Twitter) Shadab Khan is another Pakistani all-rounder to have found the list. While Faheem is a medium-fast bowler, Shadab is a right-arm spinner. In comparison, Shadab’s numbers look solid on paper. It’s his batting which hasn’t been able to see much improvement over a period of time. He was brought into the Pakistan side as a finisher. but he hasn’t been able to live up to the expectations. His run in Test cricket has been pretty ordinary till now. In six games, he has not been able to pick up a fifer yet. In the batting department, his highest score is 56. Considering he’s regarded as the finest Pakistani all-rounder, one does expect something better from him. 11. Tom Curran Tom Curran. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Here’s one fast bowler who has been expensive regularly. There’s hardly a bowling performance of Tom Curran where he hasn’t gone for over 6 RPO in ODIs and 10 RPO in T20Is. While his career in Test cricket never saw an upturn after his infamous no-ball wicket against Warner while he was batting at 99. Tom Curran has a career economy of 6.12 in ODIs. The economy rises up to 9.31 per over in T20Is. It’s after playing a combined 54 games in both the formats and to make it worse, he hasn’t been able to perform with the bat either. Considering the number of choices England has, it’s hard to understand why they hang on with Tom Curran. He has been average, it takes a lot to still be playing for the nation after a not-so-great run.
