World Cup 2023: Most Sixes in an Innings in ODI World Cup History

The ODI World Cup is the biggest and most prestigious cricket event which is set to return later this year in October. The tournament will be entirely hosted by India for the first time and the opening match will take place on October 5 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad where the 2019 finalists Australia and New Zealand will clash against each other.

The blockbuster event has seen a number of exciting innings and batters who favour taking large swings rather than running between the wickets. The World Cup has included a number of noteworthy occasions, including 400+ scores, double centuries, 300+ run chases, and more. Sometimes batters attempt massive shots right away from the start without remembering they are in an ODI game.

There are some players who went all out on the bowlers and smashed multiple sixes in an inning in an ODI World Cup match. The first name which comes into the list is former England skipper Eoin Morgan who smashed 17 sixes in a single inning against Afghanistan in the 2019 ODI World Cup.

Morgan scored 148 runs off just 71 balls which included 4 fours and 17 sixes and helped the team to achieve a monument total of 397 runs. When we talk about hitting sixes, it’s impossible to ignore the legendary West Indies opener Chris Gayle who is known for his humongous sixes.

West Indies and Zimbabwe faced off in a group match during the 2015 ODI World Cup where the Caribbean opener smashed a jaw-dropping double century which included 16 sixes and 10 fours. Gayle comes at the no. 2 spot in the list of most sixes in a single inning.

New Zealand's destructive opening batter Martin Guptill displayed a magnificent batting performance during the 2015 edition. In a clash against West Indies, Guptill smashed a double-century which included 24 fours and 11 sixes. There are multiple players who have smashed double-centuries in the ODI format and are set to take part in the upcoming ODI World Cup, it’d be interesting to see whether they break the record for most sixes the grand event as well.
