Few batsmen redefined the art of opening in test cricket. Matthew Hayden was one of them. The Australian southpaw never failed to take on the bowlers. He was never a Go-Out-And-Hit-It type batsman, but as he continued to get settled at the crease, Hayden made superb use of his fit to launch the spinners into the stands. He went on to hit 11 sixes in his knock of 380 against Zimbabwe included 11 sixes to break the then World Record for highest individual score in Test Cricket. He also peppered the boundary 5 times in his 203 against India in 2001, as his team went on to lose the match and the series. On an average, Hayden hit 8 sixes in every 10 tests he played.

Some lists are never complete without a person. If Andrew Flintoff wouldn&#8217;t have been in this list, it would not have defined the type of batsman he is. Batting down at number 6, considered as the link between the middle order and tail, Flintoff was that kind of batsman, who often did not play a huge innings but made up for it with match changing cameos. His best performance was 7 sixes in his 191 ball 167 against West Indies in Birmingham in 2004. Flintoff hit atleast a six in every test match he played.

In his era, Richards was considered to be the most destructive batsman ever produced. There were many who played better than him but no one dared to take on the bowling as he did. Brian Lara has been one of the most influential southpaws in the history of the game, whether it came to shattering the records, reclaiming the records or saving the match single handedly. He played in one of the best eras of the game as he captained the West Indies side for half a decade. A batsman who used to play more on the ground than in the year, the maximum number of sixes that Lara hit in an innings in a test is 4, during his knock of record-reclaiming 400 against England in St John&#8217;s in 2004. His knock of 375, did not include a single hit out of the park.

<p><strong>Top 10 most sixes in Test cricket by a player:</strong> The thing that mostly excites the crowds in a cricket ground is sixes. Fours, wickets and extras possibly come after that. In the modern fast forward world, <a title="Top 10 Batsmen with most sixes in ODI cricket" href="http://www.crictracker.com/top-10-batsmen-with-most-sixes-in-odi-cricket/" target="_blank"><strong>we see some slam-bang batting in both ODIs and T20s.</strong></a> But taking on the bowlers in test matches, the real format of the gentlemen&#8217;s game is totally a different act. Out of the top 10 batsmen, only 2 of them are playing the game actively at this point of time.</p>

<p>Few batsmen redefined the art of opening in test cricket. Matthew Hayden was one of them. The Australian southpaw never failed to take on the bowlers. He was never a Go-Out-And-Hit-It type batsman, but as he continued to get settled at the crease, Hayden made superb use of his fit to launch the spinners into the stands. He went on to hit 11 sixes in his knock of 380 against Zimbabwe included 11 sixes to break the then World Record for highest individual score in Test Cricket. He also peppered the boundary 5 times in his 203 against India in 2001, as his team went on to lose the match and the series. On an average, Hayden hit 8 sixes in every 10 tests he played.</p>

<p>Some lists are never complete without a person. If Andrew Flintoff wouldn&#8217;t have been in this list, it would not have defined the type of batsman he is. Batting down at number 6, considered as the link between the middle order and tail, Flintoff was that kind of batsman, who often did not play a huge innings but made up for it with match changing cameos. His best performance was 7 sixes in his 191 ball 167 against West Indies in Birmingham in 2004. Flintoff hit atleast a six in every test match he played.</p>

<p>In his era, Richards was considered to be the most destructive batsman ever produced. There were many who played better than him but no one dared to take on the bowling as he did. In an era dominated by test cricket and batsmen who preferred to hang out for hours on the crease, Richards was a completely opposite character. On April 11, 1986, Richards went after the English bowling in St. John&#8217;s as he went on to hit 7 sixes in his 87-ball 110.</p>

<p>Controversial outside the field, it was sheer entertainment to watch bat, specially in white flannels and red balls. Chris Cairns loved to take on the opposition bowlers and many-a-times rescued New Zealand out of struggle single handedly. One can easily understand the impact of Cairns, as he went on to hit 87 sixes from the 62 tests he played, and on an average hit atleast a six in every match he played.</p>

<p>Brian Lara has been one of the most influential southpaws in the history of the game, whether it came to shattering the records, reclaiming the records or saving the match single handedly. He played in one of the best eras of the game as he captained the West Indies side for half a decade. A batsman who used to play more on the ground than in the year, the maximum number of sixes that Lara hit in an innings in a test is 4, during his knock of record-reclaiming 400 against England in St John&#8217;s in 2004. His knock of 375, did not include a single hit out of the park.</p>
<h4><strong>5. Virender Sehwag &#8211; 91 Sixes:<br>

<p>The least would have been incomplete if there is no Virender Sehwag in the list and more incomplete had there not been an Indian. The only batsman to convert his 10 successive centuries (Tests and ODIs included) into 150+ scores, Sehwag&#8217;s maximum number of sixes (7) in an innings came when he scored 294 runs against Sri Lanka in Mumbai in 2009. He also hit 6 sixes in his knock of 309 against Pakistan in Multan in 2004.</p>

<p>Considered as the most complete player of this generation, Jacques Kallis is 4th in the list of players to hit maximum number of sixes in his entire career in test cricket. Considering the nature of batsman Kallis was, it is quite surprising when we see the name of Kallis in the list. But considering the number of matches he played, he is the only batsman among top 10 with worst number of sixes (6) hit per match in test cricket.</p>

<p>The destructive southpaw of West Indies is the second in the list of the players with maximum sixes in test cricket. Given the kind of game he plays, Gayle always likes to go after the bowling from the word &#8220;GO&#8221;. If one doesn&#8217;t know, Chris Gayle is the first and the only batsman to hit a six in the first ball of the first innings in test cricket. It can be assumed that Chris Gayle will likely hit some more sixes in test cricket as he may play a few more, and can also become the man with the record to hit maximum sixes in test cricket.</p>

<p>The man with the record to hit maximum sixes in test cricket is none other than the former wicket-keeper batsman of Australia, Adam Gilchrist. No one has hit more than 100 sixes in their career in test cricket and the man to reach that milestone first and hold the record is Gilchrist.</p>

<p>The Kiwi skipper during the New Zealand v Sri Lanka 1st Test, walked out to bat in the second innings for just 6 balls and during brief stay at the crease struck 2 sixes which got his sixes tally to 100 which makes him the first batsman ahead of the legendary Adam Gilchrist to hit 100 sixes in Test cricket. The cool yet flamboyant Black Caps skipper has been in the pink of form this year and certainly looks set to take his total a lot higher.</p>
