The India cricket team is a bunch of youngsters trying to make it big in international cricket and then there is Virat Kohli and Mahendra Singh Dhoni. They have almost and over 10,000 runs in ODI cricket respectively and tons of experience in their bags. Guys like Shreyas Iyer who are still young in their career get to share the dressing room with them and look out for advice from the senior pros.

It isn’t easy for the players to stay grounded when there is so much going on in the outside world. They are on TV, the popularity on social media goes over the roof, there is more attention from the opposite sex and it can all go wrong. Then there is the Indian media that always likes to talk about the players and in a country full of experts people always have some “gyaan (knowledge)” to offer.

While the criticism at times can trouble the players MS Dhoni among those who doesn’t follow news in any form. Iyer revealed that after joining the team Dhoni adviced him to not read the newspapers and stay away from social media.

“After I joined the Indian cricket team, MS Dhoni advised me that I need to avoid reading the newspapers and should try to stay away from social media as much as possible,” Iyer was quoted as saying on NDTV.

“Social media has become a big part of our lives and I try to manage it well but it’s the criticism that motivates me and keeps me going,” he added.

Golddigger alert

Iyer was picked in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2015 and things changed for him right after that. He started drawing more interest from people around him who weren’t in touch before and he realized that they might just be behind him for his money and fame.

“Soon after the auction news was out, this girl whom I knew started messaging me. On confronting her as to why she is desperately trying to reach out, I got to know that she was doing so because she was happy for me. That’s when I understood that rather than getting to know me, she was behind the money,” Iyer further added.

He has been a part of the Indian limited-overs team for a while now and was also with the Men in Blue on the tour of England.
