In a very shocking turn of events, ace Indian cricketer MS Dhoni suddenly stepped down as the limited overs captain of the national side yesterday. The official social media accounts of the BCCI confirmed the news and soon it was BCCI CEO Rahul Johri confirming the same as well.
Dhoni led Team India in 199 ODIs and his decision to step down as the captain came as a surprise to most critics. Neither did MS Dhoni give a comment on his decision nor any of his close associates made a call on the same. Hence, it was all in dark state as to why MS called it a day as the captain of the Indian team two days ahead of the England series.
Now, as per reports in NDTV, the decision can well be accredited to the long walk he had with the chief selector MSK Prasad at Nagpur recently. As the chief selector, MSK Prasad was present at Jamtha, Nagpur to witness the semi-final clash between Jharkhand and Gujarat. Dhoni was also seen at the venue as the unofficial mentor of the Jharkhand team.
Throughout this Ranji Trophy season, Dhoni was with the side and the players often credited the success to their ‘unofficial’ mentor. As a result, Jharkhand made it to the finals of the tournament for the first time in the history. Apparently, it was MSD, who sent a message with just 3 words to MSK Prasad on Wednesday evening. All Dhoni had to say was, “Ok, that’s it.”

Whether the selectors pressurized MS to quit captaincy behind the closed doors or in the backdrop, it is still unknown and perhaps will never be known either. The Indian team has often seen that the senior players are rarely axed or dropped. They take their retirement calls when they feel like. Thankfully for the fans, MS Dhoni did not hang his boots and only stepped down as the captain.
The reason behind the selectors and the management eyeing a leadership change is related to the fact that the team needs to build up for the ICC events. Less than 6 months remain before India plays in the ICC Champions Trophy. Moreover, they have 55 ODIs to play before taking part in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. To add a little more to it, Virat Kohli’s supreme leadership in Tests only added the pressure on the World Cup winning Indian captain.
