MS Dhoni is India’s greatest ever cricketer: Kapil Dev
Dhoni is expected to play a pivotal role in next year's World Cup.
Back in 2004, wicketkeeper MS Dhoni forayed into international cricket against Bangladesh and he perished for a duck. The Jharkhand-born cricketer took some time to get going but eventually carved himself as one of India’s most dependable players in all three formats. He captained the national team for the maiden occasion in the 2007 T20 World Cup and won them the championship.
Later that year, he was crowned as the ODI captain and ever since, he hasn’t looked back by any stretch of the imagination. In 2011, he won the 50-overs World Cup and a couple of years later in 2013, the experienced campaigner led India to glory in the Champions Trophy in England. Quite expectantly, Kapil Dev, the 1983 World Cup-winning captain, hailed Dhoni as India’s greatest ever cricketer.
Kapil praise MS Dhoni
“MS Dhoni is the greatest player India has ever produced. He played 90 Tests and then said let’s give a chance to the youngsters. Dhoni did that and hats off to him for putting his country before himself,” Kapil was quoted as saying at Agenda Aaj Tak on Tuesday.
Dhoni hasn’t had the best times in international cricket of late. He has looked a pale shadow of his glorious past and has strained to churn out superlative shows with the bat in hand. Subsequently, he was also dropped from the T20I squads that played three-match series’ against Windies and Australia. Nevertheless, his wicketkeeping abilities remain as an asset for the Indian team.
The next World Cup is scheduled to start on May 30, 2019, in England and the veteran is expected to play a pivotal role for the Men in Blue. Apart from India, he has also captained Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to as many as three titles- 2010, 2011 and 2018- in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and a couple of Champions League T20 championship 2010 and 2014 respectively.
