Afghanistan cricket has risen through the ranks over the years and has gained the full member status across all the three formats now. Their players give their best in every game which was evident in the recently concluded Asia Cup. While Mohammad Shahzad is the renowned wicketkeeper in the country, very few knew Afsar Zazai who was preferred to do the job in their debut Test against India and it is no surprise his idol is MS Dhoni.
The Indian veteran has made a name for himself with his street smartness. He is still the best wicketkeeper in the country and no wonder the cricketers across the globe admire Dhoni. Afsar is no different as he showered praises on the legendary cricketer for the way he carries himself on and off the field.
Zazai is currently playing in the ongoing Afghanistan Premier League (APL) in Sharjah and revealed that MS Dhoni is his idol. “He (Dhoni) has been my idol since childhood. I like his coolness. His attitude on and off the field is remarkable,” he said while speaking to Sportstar.
Hopes for a great season
Afsar Zazai is playing for Kabul Zwanan led by Rashid Khan in the APL and is hoping for the league to get the much-needed support from the crowd who came out in large numbers during the Asia Cup. “Lots of Afghan people, who live in the UAE, had come to support at the recent Asia Cup in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. I hope those fans come for the APL matches too,” the 25-year-old added.
He was all praise of the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) for organising the league of its own in such a short span of time and felt that it will only help the youngsters in the country improve. The likes of Chris Gayle and Brendon McCullum among many others are playing in the league which will benefit the budding cricketers.
