The role of a finisher is one of the difficult roles in cricket as it requires patience, a calm approach, and risk-free shots. Over the years Michael Bevan was widely regarded as the best finisher owing to his calculative approach while batting and chasing targets.

Later in the late 2000s, MS Dhoni gave this role a new dimension by mixing power and touch game. The former India skipper has remained unbeaten 47 times in run-chases and has scored 2,876 runs in successful chases for India. His exploits while donning the finisher’s hat has made him a role model for many cricketers not only in India but outside too.

South Africa’s hard-hitting batter David Miller who performs the role of finisher for Proteas too is one such admirer of Dhoni.  During a fun #Askmiller session on Twitter, a fan asked the dashing southpaw to describe the former India captain to which Miller replied by saying

“One of my favourite cricketers. Best finisher I’ve seen, very humble, and love his calm demeanour.”

Both Miller and Dhoni were seen in action during the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) playing for Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) respectively. While the southpaw managed to get 62 in a match and showed his destructive side, but failed to get going in the rest of the matches as ended up scoring only 88 in five games.

On the other hand, the CSK skipper found the going tough, as he has failed to score a fifty since the 2019 season. Dhoni would often come in late but failed to get going immediately and surprisingly would use a lot of balls.

The 39-year-old though was fantastic while leading the side and his move to send Moen Ali up the order proved to be a masterstroke. Dhoni also guided Ravindra Jadeja and his smartness in saying to him that the dry ball would turn, while getting rid of Jos Buttler was lauded by one and all.

While Dhoni will only be seen in action in September when the IPL restarts, Miller will be in action against the West Indies for their limited-overs series starting in June.
