MS Dhoni is someone I've always admired: Kane Williamson

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson is regarded as one of the most respected and humble captains in the cricket fraternity. He is basking in joy as he recently welcomed his first child (baby girl) with his wife Sarah Raheem. The 30-year-old was on paternity leave when New Zealand beat West Indies in the Wellington Test and then beat Pakistan in Auckland to secure a 1-0 lead in the ongoing T20I series.

The Black Caps skipper was involved in a candid conversation with a leading news portal where he answered the questions related to his captaincy, batting and balancing his two roles perfectly on the cricket field. During the conversation, Williamson also revealed the name of the captain from the history of the cricket fraternity under whom he would have liked playing.

On being asked, “Is there a captain from history you would have liked to have played under/learned from?”, Williamson told Gray Nicolls that “MS Dhoni is someone I’ve always admired in the way he operates.”

Former Indian captain MS Dhoni is one of the most successful captains in the history of the gentleman’s game. He is the only leader to have won all the three ICC trophies be it the 2011 World Cup, 2007 T20 World Cup, and 2013 Champions Trophy. Under his leadership, India also achieved the number one spot in all three formats of the game.

Further in the interaction, Kane Williamson also revealed how he sees himself as a leader of the Black Caps. On being asked to describe himself as a leader, Williamson reckoned that being inclusive and understanding the players helps him in essaying his role as a leader.

“Tough question – I always feel it’s easier for other people to describe your leadership. However, I think it’s important to understand the people in your group and get buy-in from everyone; being inclusive can help people move in a similar direction.” the New Zealand skipper answered.

The New Zealand team will now be up against Pakistan in the two-match Test series, starting from December 26 in Mount Maunganui. It is an important series for New Zealand considering this will affect their chances of making it to the final of the World Test Championship in 2021.
