Rishabh Pant equalled the World record in the Adelaide by grabbing 11 catches across both the innings as India scripted a historic win to take the lead in the four-match series. He had a great chance to own the record but dropped a tough chance offered by Pat Cummins in the second session of the fifth day of the Test. While many are lauding Pant for his efforts, he has credited his success to the former India captain MS Dhoni.
The youngster is tipped to be the long-term successor of Dhoni across all the formats. In the Tests though, Pant was only roped in due to Dinesh Karthik‘s failure and Wriddhiman Saha’s injury. Having said that, he has done nothing wrong in the five Tests so far apart from his flashy style of batting which has yielded mixed results.
Whenever he’s around, I feel more confident as a person
Speaking about the legendary cricketer, Rishabh Pant went on to say that Dhoni has had a lot of influence on him early in his international career. Pant has learned a lot from him and feels more confident whenever he’s around in the squad and also labelled him as the hero of the country.
“He’s the hero of the country. I’ve learnt a lot from him as a person and as a cricketer as well. Whenever he’s around, I feel more confident as a person. If I’ve got any problems I can share it with him and get a solution right away. As a wicketkeeper and a player (he’s taught me) to be patient in pressure situations like this (in Adelaide). You have to keep calm and keep composed and try to give 100 per cent,” Pant said while speaking to cricket.com.au.
Moreover, the 21-year-old also admitted that he wasn’t aware of the world record in sight and said, “I never thought of the record but it’s good to take some catches and put it inside my kitty. It’s good to have milestones, but I’m not thinking about that too much.”
