2019 is just about to end and the confusion surrounding the future of MS Dhoni in international cricket is still there. A lot has been talked and heard about Dhoni since the former India skipper left everyone surprised by taking a sabbatical from the game in the summer. As soon as the World Cup ended in July, the veteran wicketkeeper-batsman decided to join army.
He served the army in Jammu and Kashmir and thus missed the tour of West Indies. The 38-year old was expected to return to action in the home season but he decided to stay away from the game. And his sabbatical from the game has not ended yet. During this phase, neither MS Dhoni nor the selectors and anyone else has given a concrete comment on what the future holds for the World Cup-winner.
Dhoni himself told some journalists not to ask him about his future until January 2020. On the other hand, MSK Prasad, chief of the selection panel, stated that the selectors are moving on from the veteran and would thus try out youngsters. Consequently, Rishabh Pant has been the man behind the stumps in ODIs and T20Is.
Ganguly on Dhoni’s future
Since taking over as the BCCI president, former India skipper Sourav Ganguly has spoken on MS Dhoni a number of times. And the legendary cricketer has once again spoken on the much-talked-about topic when asked about his former teammate’s retirement. “It is up to him, with so much of experience, I am sure he knows what’s best for him,” Ganguly was quoted as saying by Times Now.
Earlier, Ganguly had insisted that there was absolute clarity between the board and MS Dhoni regarding the player’s future. He, however, had declined to reveal much on the wicketkeeper-batsman, saying that ‘certain things cannot be said on public platform’.
“No no, there is clarity, but certain things cannot be said on public platform. There is absolute clarity on MS Dhoni and you’ll find out in time. There’s transparency between the Board, MS and the selectors. When you deal with such champions — MS Dhoni is an unbelievable athlete for India — certain things have to be kept within the closed doors. It’s very transparent and everybody knows where they stand,” Ganguly had said.
