Veteran Indian cricketer MS Dhoni is arguably the most popular cricketer in the world cricketer at the moment. He is revered as the greatest finisher in the limited overs cricket. Dhoni holds numerous records to his name. But the record that sets him apart from everybody else is the distinction of being the only captain to have won the World T20, World Cup, and the Champions Trophy.
He has been an inspiring figure for many young cricketers across the globe. His leadership skills are often seen as benchmark for the young captains. Even on the present day, he continues to guide the Indian captain Virat Kohli in times of crisis on the field. So how did captaincy come to MS Dhoni?
Dhoni was named as the captain of the Indian team back in the year 2007, just before the inaugural edition of the ICC World T20. The dynamic wicketkeeper-batsman ended up scripting history by leading India to the championship. Soon, he assumed the captaincy responsibility in the ODI cricket, and eventually in Tests.
The ability to read the game
In a recent interaction, MS Dhoni was asked about the reason why he was chosen as the Indian captain. Dhoni was quick to answer that he was not present when he was being named as the leader of the team. However, he feels that it was his honesty and the ability to read the game that fetched him the captaincy.
“I was not part of the conversation when I was made captain of the team. I feel that looking at everything, maybe it was the honesty that I had, and my ability to read the game. Reading the game is very important, and even though I was one of the youngest in the team at that point of time, when asked about my views by a senior player, I was not afraid or hesitant to share my feelings about the game. It probably also had to do with the fact that I was quite good with the other team members in the squad at that point of time,” MS Dhoni was quoted as saying by The Print.
