MS Dhoni should bat at number four in the World Cup: Anil Kumble
"If India is in trouble, push him up."
MS Dhoni is undoubtedly one of the greatest cricketers India have ever produced. At the age of 37, he is nearing the end of his illustrious career and his skills with the bat in hand are also on the wane. Last year, he was also slammed for his lacklustre shows in limited-overs cricket for India. However, the year 2019 has started on a happy note for the experienced campaigner from Jharkhand.
Recently, he scored three half-centuries in a row in the ODI series against Australia and was subsequently adjudged as the Player of the Tournament award. The veteran also did decently enough in the One Day series against New Zealand and is currently plying his trade in the T20I series.
Dhoni has also been touted as a key player in the World Cup, scheduled to start on May 30. Virat Kohli, the Indian captain, has also talked in support of Dhoni when criticisms were hurled at Dhoni. In the meantime, Anil Kumble, the former Indian cricketer, believes that Dhoni should bat at number four.
And others can be a bit positive around him
India have encountered the number four conundrum for quite a while now and apart from Dhoni, Ambati Rayudu, who has been fantastic of late, is also in contention to take the number four slot. Kumble also mentioned that Dhoni’s experience can work out well for the national team.
“I think there is a lot of talk especially when MS comes into the batting line up. About not having to go all the way and win matches. He has done that in Australia, he has done that many numbers of times. I still believe that he is someone who can bat at number four. If India is in trouble, push him up,” Kumble was quoted as saying in Cricket Next.
“He will take his time, you need that and then he has the experience so that he makes sure he bats till the end. And others can be a bit positive around him. I think that is the role he will play and his experience is really needed not just in front of the stumps and also behind the stumps,” he added.
