MS Dhoni's future depends on the performance of Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson: VVS Laxman

MS Dhoni’s future in international cricket is one of the most debated topics at the present. Dhoni, who has been an integral part of Indian cricket, has been away from the game for quite a while now. Ever since India’s semi-final exit from the ICC World Cup 2019 against New Zealand in August, a lot of rumours have been circulating regarding Dhoni‘s retirement.

Fans are eager to see him return to action while donning CSK jersey in the upcoming IPL season. Recently, the right-hander was seen practicing in nets in the Jharkhand cricket association stadium in Ranchi. Former Indian batsman VVS Laxman has also shared his opinion regarding Dhoni’s future in international cricket.

Speaking on Dhoni’s return, VVS Laxman has expressed that the former skipper’s future in international cricket is dependent on the performance of youngsters- Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson. Laxman believes that Dhoni will keep a close eye on how Pant and Samson perform over the next few months as it might influence the veteran to make his decision regarding his retirement.

“I think Dhoni will wait with patience to see the performance of Pant and Samson. Whenever he gets an opportunity and he will take a call after the IPL because the way I am seeing it, Dhoni is preparing himself for the IPL. I’m sure he will do well like he has done whenever he plays and leads CSK,” Laxman told Star Sports.

Recently, India’s head coach Ravi Shastri had also stated that the upcoming IPL 2020 will play a crucial role in deciding if Dhoni will be included in the 2020 World T20 squad.

“It all depends on when he starts playing and how he is playing during the IPL. What are the other people doing with the wicket-keeping gloves or what is the form of those players as opposed to Dhoni’s form. The IPL becomes a massive tournament because that could be the last tournament after which more or less your 15 is decided,” Shastri had said.
