MS Dhoni has been an integral member of the national team, but his stupendous abilities have been on the wane and he isn’t the brute force he used to be even a couple of years ago. While his keeping and insights have helped India to a large extent, he hasn’t quite been able to weave his magic with the bat in hand, something which has earned him quite a bit of criticism.
Yesterday, the T20I squads for India’s series against the Windies and Australia were announced and the Jharkhand-born cricketer didn’t find a place in both squads. In the meantime, an official of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) put forth the reasons behind his exclusion and mentioned that the decision has been taken after Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s approval.
Both Virat and Rohit were present at the selection meeting
“It’s a given that Dhoni won’t be around when next ICC World T20 happens in Australia in 2020. So, there wasn’t any point continuing with him if he will not play World T20,” the official was quoted as saying in Times Now.
“Obviously, the selectors and team management had a good deliberation on this issue. Both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were present at the selection committee meeting. You think selectors could have gone ahead without their approval?” the official added.
Kohli has been rested for the series against the Caribbean team and Rohit, who led India in the Asia Cup, has been appointed as the skipper. However, the Delhi-born cricketer would be back for the Australia series, which gets underway on Wednesday, November 21 at The Gabba in Brisbane.
India are currently playing the five-match ODI series against Jason Holder’s men after which T20I series will be played from November 4 with Kolkata, Lucknow, and Chennai being the venues for the 20-overs series.
