India’s bearer to the 2011 World Cup glory, Yuvraj Singh recently spoke about how MS Dhoni’s role in the Indian team makes him a crucial candidate. He has voiced his opinion on the topic of MS Dhoni’s inclusion in the World Cup squad. India claimed it’s second World Cup glory in 2011 holding the hand of veteran batsman Yuvraj and under the captaincy of the Dhoni.
While his own World Cup dreams are evidently over, Yuvy has clearly stated that India needs their former captain, MS Dhoni. Yuvraj lauded the 37-year-old from Jharkhand and remarked that he has acted as a guide to the likes of Virat Kohli, the all-format Indian captain.
“I think Mahi (Dhoni) has a great cricket brain. And as a wicket-keeper, you are in the best position to monitor the game and he has done that fantastically over the years. He has been a great captain. (He is) with the young players and guiding Virat (Kohli) all the time,” Yuvraj was quoted as saying in Sportstar.
“So, I feel his presence is very important in decision-making. He had a fantastic tournament in Australia and it is good to see him hit the ball how he used to do, and I wish him all the best,” he further added. When asked about another crucial question, that is which position should Dhoni bat on, Yuvraj retorted with a very diplomatic answer.
“That you have to ask Dhoni, which number he has to bat,” he said. In fact, it can be said that Dhoni has almost cemented his position in the Indian team for the World Cup. But the questions surrounding his batting position are still unanswered.
Backing for Dhoni from former cricketers
Not just Yuvraj, but many other major cricketers have spoken in Dhoni’s favour. We all know what went down between Yuvraj Singh and Dhoni that also involved the former’s father, Yograj Singh. But keeping everything aside, the batsman, famous for his six sixes in 2007 WT20, acknowledged the value of MS.
Besides Yuvraj, even Gautam Gambhir, in the commentary box during the ongoing tour of New Zealand, spoke about how Dhoni should bat at No.4. Former Indian legend, Sunil Gavaskar has also backed Dhoni due to his enormous grasp of match situations which makes him invaluable.
