MSK Prasad-led selection panel likely to pick squad for Sri Lanka T20Is

MSK Prasad tenure as an Indian chief selector came to its end after the BCCI decided not to extend his tenure in the Annual General Meeting held in Mumbai on December 4. But, there are reports that he along with his selection panel will pick the squad for the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka starting on January 5.

The former wicketkeeper was appointed as the national selector back in 2016. His tenure was full of ups and downs as he was applauded for some of his decisions but had to face the criticism on many occasions as well. One decision because of which he was brought under scanner was picking Vijay Shankar over Ambati Rayudu in World Cup 2019. Many former cricketers also vocalised their voice over the same and some started questioning his credibility as a selector as well.

BCCI official opines on the selection of squad for the Sri Lanka T20I series

A top BCCI official told that the board is still waiting for the hearing of Supreme Court because that will give some clarity over all the amendments that BCCI has put forward in front of the apex governing council. It is confirmed that Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) will not be formed before January.

Hence, it will take some time to appoint the new selection committee. As per him, there is still no confirmation if the new selection committee will pick the squad for the important tour of New Zealand or the existing panel will do the honours for the same.

“It is unlikely that the CAC will be formed before the Supreme Court hearing in January.  “So naturally, the selection committee might also take some time to form. It is still not clear whether the new selection committee or the existing one will pick the squad for the marquee New Zealand tour,” a BCCI top official said as quoted by India Today

After the AGM, Sourav Ganguly recited that there is no use of CAC because they just have to appoint a selection committee and coach. In contrary to that, selectors stay for four years and the coach is appointed for three years. Keeping them active in the ranks will lead to a conflict of interest and it is not the best thing according to the BCCI President.
