Mukesh Ambani retains top position in Forbes' list of richest sports team owner

For the second year in a row, Mukesh Ambani, owner of Indian Premier League franchise Mumbai Indians, has been named as the richest sports team owner in the world. Ambani’s net-worth has moved in north direction in the last 12 months as it is now valued at $ 50 billion compared to $ 40.1 billion a year ago. Ambani is the 13th-richest person on the planet, the richest person in India as his net worth has more than doubled over the past two years.

Unsurprisingly, the Indian business magnate is at the top of the Forbes’ list of World Richest Team Owners. According to the report in Forbes, there are 58 billionaire owners of teams in major sports leagues across the globe. Overall, they own 70 teams and are worth a combined staggering amount of $359 billion. Ambani is followed by Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer in the list. Ballmer is the wealthiest owner of an American sports team.

Red Bull billionaire Dietrich Mateschitz is the third-richest team owner, at $18.9 billion. San Jose Sharks owner Hasso Plattner ($13.5 billion) and Chelsea’s Roman Abramovich ($12.4 billion) complete the top five. No other Indian feature in even top twenty.

Ambani is the managing director, and the largest shareholder of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), a Fortune Global 500 company and India’s most valuable company by its market value. He has been India’s richest person for quite some time now and has constantly featured in Forbes’ list of richest persons in the world.

Mumbai Indians as successful as their owner:

Just like their owner, Mumbai Indians are also one of the most successful teams in the history of the Indian Premier League. After making a slow start in the league, they won their maiden title in 2013 and have not looked back since then. In the last six seasons, they have won the IPL title thrice in addition to winning the now-scrapped Champions League T20 twice. In 2017, they became the first team to win the IPL title thrice before Chennai Super Kings joined the club last year.
